An avid rider since the age of 8 years old and growing up in Cape Town, South Africa riding and showing horses in several disciplines, Lindsay’s exposure to the world of the American Saddlebred at 13 had a life changing influence on her choice of careers. While still persuing her involvement with Arabian horses, dressage and jumping, Lindsay explored the possibilities of spending a year in the States to further broaden her knowledge of the care and training of this ‘Peacock of the Showring ‘.
At the tender age of 18 , having just successfully completing her South African Judges Card, but being deemed ‘too young’ to be licensed, Lindsay set out on her quest of becoming a ‘complete horsewoman’. Accepted sight unseen for a British Horse Society’s Instructor’s Course based on her Pony Club ‘A’ level certification, Lindsay earned her credentials at the prestigious Moat House Academy in Benenden, Kent, England, under the tutelage of Cherry Hatton Hall Chief Instructor to Princess Anne of England. While in England she was chosen to be personal groom to the Academy’s College Team traveling to all the internationally known competition sites with Olympic level horses.
In August 1973, Lindsay flew to Louisville, KY for the American Saddlebred World Championships, quickly securing a job with Bob & Judy Whitney’s Saddlebred & Morgan show stable, and traveling the show circuit with such notables as Ronald Reagan (WC ASB Fine Harness ) Aristocratic Flare (2YO WC ASB Fine Harness ), Featherbed, My Lily Langtry, Dusty Springfield, Rhythm’s Jewel and many others, making the circuit from Montgomery AL, to Washington, Detroit, Devon, Northampton , Indianapolis, Springfield, Kansas City, caring for champions and assisting with their training and showing.
A brief stint with legendary trainer, Art Simmons in historic Mexico, Missouri, followed by employment with World Champion Saddlebred trainers such as Bill Wise, Rex & Shirley Parkinson, Bob Rowan and Dave Becker, helped Lindsay form her own style of developing horses. A job opportunity with Arabian show horses kept her foot in that world also, and to this day horses trained by Lindsay continue to make their mark on the show results.
In 1980, Lindsay ‘switched leads’ and plunged into the Thoroughbred breeding industry, working for Taylor Made Farm in Nicholasville, KY primarily in the broodmare division , gaining invaluable experience in breeding, foaling and raising million dollar Thoroughbreds, especially developing a knack for settling problem mares. Fascinated by the Thoroughbred sales market, Lindsay continues to freelance as a marketing and sales professional for Taylor Made Sales Agency, the industry leader in the marketing of millions of dollars worth annually of yearlings and breeding stock, and in that capacity has become a familiar face at Lexington’s prestigious bloodstock sales, where her knowledge of the industry and pedigrees and conformation is well respected.
The opening of Silverstone Farm in 1983, brought Lindsay the chance to train and present both horses and riders at the nations’ competitons, in a variety of divisions. Lindsay’s daughters, Bianca and Brooke, also notable equestrian artists while persuing their chosen non-horsey careers, have shown winner after winner since they were young from 4-H to National competition. A visit to the Silverstone website will give you a glimpse into the accomplishments of the Silverstone ‘family ‘
In 2006, Silverstone Equicenter was developed as a full service training and instructional facility. Lindsay strives to instill in her students a small portion of the vast knowledge that makes her a ‘Complete Horsewoman’.
